JESC 2010 - The Vote

Nicole Azzopardi banner

18 September 2010

Nicole Azzopardi, the Maltese representative for 2010, has given us an exclusive interview! Read on, and remember to cast a vote for Malta in November!

Nicole Azzopardi Junior Eurovision 2010Hi Nicole! Firstly, congratulations on the victory! Were you expecting “Knock Knock..Boom Boom!” to do well in the competition?

Thanks a lot  :D ! I truly believed in the song and the whole package.  The whole team and I worked very hard to put up the show. Though there were many good songs and JESC described this edition of the Malta Eurosong as the best ever, I was expecting that my song places in a high position, nevertheless, I like to keep my feet on the ground and gave my very best.  I truly liked all of the songs, each had something special, I could not stop singing and dancing to all the songs in the greenroom during the festival.

You have entered the Junior Eurosong in Malta several times before since 2007, how do you feel you have developed as a singer since “Life is a Playground”?

Life is a playground was my first experience at JESC.  I was only 10 years old and the youngest of all the contestants.  Today I feel I have matured more and gained a lot of experience.

Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and what your song is about?

I am always on the lookout for something new.  There is never a dull moment in my life and I am always surrounded by friends and pets. People describe me as bubbly and fun to be with.  My song is about a girl between childhood and youth. The song is about the message young people want to share which serves as a reminder to adults that the kids of today are the adults of tomorrow.

The JESC community is calling the 2010 national final the best ever from Malta – which other songs were your favourite?

Certainly there was a lot of high quality material.  I can’t pick just one tune. All songs were great. I am very proud and happy to have won this edition.

What have the reactions been in Malta to your win, how have your friends and classmates reacted?

I can’t catch up with the amount of emails, sms, chat requests, facebook ads and messages, telephone calls, radio and TV interviews and so on. It’s just been so busy.  The comments were fantastic and the response from the public is overwhelming.  People keep telling me that I am making them proud to be Maltese since I will be singing partly in Maltese.  The song incorporates part of a traditional Maltese rhyme, bum bum il-bieb which translated means boom boom on the door- meaning there is someone knocking at the door. I am sure the song will receive positive feedback from other countries.

Are you nervous about the Junior Eurovision in Minsk, or simply excited? Do you plan to do much rehearsing and training before then?

I am excited, yes of course I have to be ready. I am looking forward to start rehearsing again after 2 weeks break.

Have you spoken to any past Maltese JESC singers to get advice?

Yes, it’s natural on a small island contact is easy.  I cherish their opinion and honest advice.  The most important advice I got was to enjoy this experience and have fun meeting other children from different countries to learn about their culture and way of living.

How will your JESC performance in Belarus differ from the national final performance, will you make changes to costume, dancers, dance etc?

It’s a bit too soon for now, we will know when we start the rehearsals again.

Are you listening to the other songs selected for JESC so far, which is your favourite and which do you think is the most competition?

Yes I am, so far only a few songs are available.  It’s not fair to say which is my favourite song so far as I would like to hear what the other contestants have to offer.

So far Malta is leading the online polls. How do you feel about being the fan favourite, like Laura Omloop from Belgium last year?

I am very pleased that many people like my song.  This is also reflected in the number of views and positive comments I am getting on YouTube.

Nicole Azzopardi knock knock boom boom

Maltese traditionally is never used in JESC, why did you decide to add a verse in Maltese to the song?

It was just after a lesson of Maltese culture that the idea came to mind.  We were discussing traditional Maltese games, amongst which is Passju, Lakstu, iz-zunzana ddur ddur and bum bum il-bieb. The rhyme of the latter game remained in my thoughts.  I thought that this rhyme was so cute that it could become popular even outside our shores.  Of course the subject of the story is not the game but the youth knocking on tomorrow’s door, knock knock and bum bum fuse quite well both in their meaning and in the rhyme.

Have you watched any past Junior Eurovision contests, what has been your favourite entries from the past? What about the adult Eurovision, do you have any favourites from there?

Yes I watched all the past JESC editions.  My all time favourite is last years’ Click Clack of Ralph! As far as the adult Eurovision, I fell in love with Apricot Stone the song of Armenia.  I think the melody is so beautiful, together with the words, singer and all, certainly 12 points from Nicole J

Do you have any plans to release a website or anything for JESC?

Yes we are working on building a little webpage. I already have a fan page and a facebook page.  The website will collate my profile, pictures and songs together with information about my country.  Watch out for www.nicole.com.mt

Finally what are you looking forward to most about traveling to Belarus?

I have never travelled to Belarus before.  I will enjoy the change in weather conditions and the culture and language of a new country.  I am certainly looking forward to this great event and to meet the other contestants.  I am sure that even though there will be some language barriers, we will easily make friends.  I wish to promote the culture of my country and share the experience and knowledge with others.  I wish that more and more people get to know how friendly, warm and welcoming is the Maltese population.
